Agat 4282

Description

One of the earliest, probably even the earliest stopwatch movements made in Russia was the caliber Agat 4282, made in Zlatoust, which was capable to measure up to 30 minutes with a resolution of 1/5 seconds.

The execution of this 11 jewels movement is straigtforward. All important bearings of the timing mechanism contain rubies, and from the less cricital center seconds indication on, we have standard drilligs. The rates on the timegrapher show, that this is absolutely sufficient.

For winding, there’s a rocking wheel keyless works on the movement side, which in one direction winds the mainspring and in the other directions slips with the help of a spring.

Agat 4282: gear train

gear train

The Agat 4282 uses the standard gear train of a stopwatch caliber: The mainspring barrel drives the 30-minutes-wheel at position 12 o’clock, followed by third wheel, center seconds wheel and the escape wheel, which is interestingly golden toned.

As excapement, a pallet lever is used with a simple, milled, also golden toned lever.

The two leg anular balance is not yet shock protected. It beats with 18000 A/h and allows a resolution of 1/5 seconds.

The precise beating rate can be adjusted with a long regulator arm and a scale.

This movement uses a column wheel, which is switched by pressing the crown. It has got three positions:

  1. Start: The breaking lever with its thin pin is removed from the balance and also gives the balance wheel the starting impulse
  2. Stop: The breaking lever is led to the balance wheel and stops it.
  3. Reset: The double arrow-shaped lever in the upper third moves the hands back to their zero position with the help of the heart cams (not visible here as they are firmly connected to the hands).

In the lab

This movement came well used into the archive and got a simple service.

Timegrapher result

Of course, the precision of a stopwatch, which can measure 30 minutes at max, is not that important, however, the timegrapher rates in the relevant positions (horizontal and crown up) are really great. The outlier values in the positions “crown to the floor” and “9 up” are fortunately irrelevant.

horizontal positions
dial up -3 s/d 224° 0.9ms
dial down +3 s/d 228° 1.0ms
vertical positions
crown right (12 up) -1 s/d 209° 1.5ms
crown up (3 up) -7 s/d 209° 0.7ms
crown left (6 up) -87 s/d 203° 0.4ms
crown down (9 up) -82 s/d 207° 0.4ms
