Emes 10

Description

Dating back to the 1940s, or possibly even the 1930s, is the rather large, 28 mm diameter (12 1/2 lignes) caliber Emes 10 from Germany. Before it got its final caliber numbering, it was known by the generic designation Emes 12 1/2’’’.

This is a simple pin lever movement, with even the minute wheel and barrel riveted on the dial side, making them irremovable, or at least not by laymen.

There are no jewels in the entire movement, and of course, all the bearings consist of simple holes in the brass plate.

Emes 10: gear train

gear train

The gear train is constructed in a manner typical of the period: The mainspring barrel drives the central minute wheel, followed by the third wheel, the decentral seconds wheel at 6 o’clock, and the escapement wheel.

The latter is actuated by a pin lever with compensating arms that half-enclose the seconds wheel. A visually appealing solution, in any case.

The Emes 10 uses a simple, non-shock-resistant, but height-adjustable anular balance, which beats at the unusually low rate of 16,200 A/h. The balance and pallet fork are mounted under the same bridge, which unfortunately makes assembly extremely difficult in practice, as the balance and pallet fork always interfere with each other.

The ratchet is located on the dial side. The ratchet wheel is riveted to the barrel core in such a way that it cannot be easily removed and the barrel taken out.

The rest of the ratchet is quite well constructed.

Similarly, the cannon pinion is riveted to the minute wheel in such a way that it cannot be removed, or at least not by laymen.

Of course, the Emes 10 uses only a rocker bar winding mechanism. This is quite robust and thus fits well with the rest of the rather crude construction and execution of this movement.
