FHF 96-4 (ST)

Description

With its diameter of 11 1/2 lignes, the FHF 96-4 belongs to the so-called “standard” movements, which were produced by different manufacturies within the Ebauches SA. It bases on the caliber FHF 96 (Standard) and extends it with a date indication.

As not otherwise to expect, this movement is well made. To achieve the “magical” number of 17 jewels, on the dial side, a cap jewel for the escape wheel had to be installed.

The design of the gear train is the classical one with center minute wheel under its own cock, which has got on its upper side a bearing ruby for the center seconds axle.

The classical gear train uses directly driven center minute- and seconds wheel. The execution is well made and all gears are interestingly silver colored, maybe made of steel.

As escapement, the classical swiss pallet lever escapement is used, which is regulated by two leg anular balance, beared in two three-leg shock protections, which cannot be determined in more detail.

It beats slowly with 18000 A/h and can be regulated at the hairspring key directly, which has got the peculiarity of an adjustable opening width by a small lever.

On the dial side, you see the yoke winding system (here with broken setting lever spring) of the FHF 96-4 as well as the preparations for the calendar mechanism.

Apart from the red numbers on the date ring, the complex switching wheel at position 11:30 is noteable: Its moveable lever mechanism with own spring (real micromechanics!) allows a semi fast date correction by turning the hands back and forth in the range of 8pm and midnight.

The date ring is beared at three positions, at 1 o’clock, at 5 o’clock and at 7 o’clock.

In the lab

The specimen shown here came in an almost NOS watch and was gummed after all the years. It got a simple revision.

Timegrapher result

For a simple revision of a gummed movement, the rates are already pretty well, however, with a true revision, they would improve a lot.
