Hamilton 995A

Description

Very small, but very high quality is the Hamilton 995A, an elliptical shaped movement for ladies’ watches in the American size 21/0s, which dates from the 1930s.

What is special about this movement is, that it is not only very lavishly equipped with bearing rubies, at that time 15 jewels were the standard, but that the bearing rubies are also all still in settings, in inserted chatons.

The construction of this movement is classic and features relatively large wheels for its small size.

The mainspring barrel drives the central minute wheel, followed by the third wheel, seconds wheel, and escape wheel. The latter two are located under a separate bridge.

Naturally, a Swiss lever escapement is used, in which — typical for American movements — the limiting pins are eccentrically adjustable.

The screw balance, which is not yet shock protected, features a blue Nivarox I hairspring with a Breguet terminal curve, which, in conjunction with the long regulator arm, enables a relatively precise regulation for the size of the movement. The movement itself operates at the usual 18,000 A/h.

From the dial side, the movement, with its striped finish, already makes a modern, uncluttered impression. The yoke winding mechanism is clearly visible on the right, and the cross-slotted adjustment options for the two lever limiting pins are at the top.
