PUW 61

Description

One of the most common post-war windup lever movements of German production is the PUW 60, which even achieved chronometer certification.

If you enlarge the mainplate of this movement from 10 1/2 to 11 1/2 lines, while leaving everything else the same, you get the caliber PUW 61 shown here.

Of course, all bearings on the PUW 61 are also equipped with jewels, and depending on the customer’s demands, more or fewer cap jewels were used. The example presented here comes with numerous of them, totaling 21 jewels.

PUW 61: base plate with minute wheel

base plate with minute wheel

The gear train design is very classic and still uses a central minute wheel, which is mounted under its own bridge.

Starting from this minute wheel follow the third wheel, the directly driven central seconds wheel, and the escape wheel. A Swiss pallet escapement is used.

The two-leg screw balance is shock-protected, here by an unspecified three-armed shock protection device. The balance still operates at a contemporary slow rate of 18,000 A/h which can be adjusted using a long regulator arm.

PUW 61: Dial side

On the dial side, the yoke winding mechanism and three cap jewels are clearly visible, although the first one, for the lever pivot bearing, is actually superfluous, as this bearing runs dry, i.e., without oil.

To somewhat conceal the increased height due to the design, the base plate is slightly beveled at the edge on the dial side.
