Baumgartner 844

Description

Probably in the mid 1970ies, Baumgartner released the caliber family 844 with different features. They contained besids an optional center second also different beating rates, different sizes and even a day/date indication.

The Baumgartner 844 described here only offers the basic functionality, hour and minute indication.

Baumgartner 844: base plate

base plate

This movement has got a pillar construction; there are now bearing jewels but for the balance staff.

Its construction is basically identical to the Baumgartner 896 resides below the one and only main plate.

Baumgartner 844: gears and trains

gears and trains

With its dial side driven hands and a directly driven center second (not used here), the gears and trains are modern.

The large three-leg ring balance beats on the specimen shown here with only 18000 A/h and controls a pin lever movement. The balance is secured against shocks in two KIF Trior bearings.

Baumgartner 844: ratchet

ratchet

The ratchet is a very simple construction, it consists of only one specially shaped spring with a dot on its top. This dot interferes with the ratchet wheel. These kind of ratchets are often found on contemporary movements, even in more expensive ones.

Baumgartner 844: mainspring barrel

mainspring barrel

The mainspring barrel consists of three gears. The lowest one drives the movement, the large top wheel the minute cannon pinion and the small top wheel the hour pinion. The two gears on the top are fix connected with each other and are mounted with a slipping clutch onto the mainspring barrel. With that Roskopf construction, there’s no need any more for a changing wheel on the dial side.

On the crude dial side, you see the yoke winding system, and, if you look exactly, at 5 o’clock the interfering of the hour wheel into the upper mainspring wheel.

In the lab

The movement shown here was visually in good condition, but didn’t run well. After a service, the cause was clear: The axle of the second wheel was broken. This is a pretty unusual error, maybe a cause of too tight windup with too much force.
