Description
In 1929, Revue, also known under their name “Uhrenfabrik Thommen” launched that rectangular movement, which was especially famous for using the available space most efficiently.
The construction allowed generously dimensioned parts such as the mainspring barrel and the screw balance and is seen by professionals as blueprint for the so called “Raumnutzwerk” (space efficiency movement) by Urofa (caliber 58).
One of the specialities of this movement is the indirect decentral seconds indication of 6 o’clock, driven by the third wheel. This was necessiary, since the seconds wheel is located at position 9 o’clock.
As usual, almost all important bearings contain rubies. The only exception is the bearing for the indirect decentral seconds hand, for which a jewel bearing would reduce the friction a little bit.
Besides the indirect decentral seconds indication, the gear train is pretty standard. Mainspring barrel, minute wheel and third wheel are beared under the barrel bridge, seconds- and escape wheel have an own bridge.
The screw balance regulates a swiss pallet lever escapement.
Unfortunately, on the specimen in the archive, the balance wheel is missing, so it cannot be described in detail.
On the dial side, you see the rather modern construction, especially the setting lever spring has got an unusual shape.
Due to its age, the Revue 54 has got no shock protection, and so the balance wheel bearing is only covered by a cap jewel.
How groundbreaking the design of the Revue 54 was can be seen on the fact, that the so-called “Raumnutzwerk” Urofa 58, lauched only a few years later, was constructed almost identically and was used quite often, at least in German watches.
